Instagram VS Real Life – Spaghetti

Instagram VS Real Life:

I’m so excited to finally start the ‘Instagram VS Real Life’ series. The idea first popped into my brain during a treacherous walk through Marrakesh, Morocco. The streets were crowded, dirty, and motorbikes were flying by at top speeds. One wrong step and you would be trampled or run over. The only tourists walking down the road were Jackie and I and another couple. The other couple was visibly uncomfortable. They did not seem to be enjoying themselves and the man was clutching an expensive looking camera like it was their new-born child. That was until we all turned the corner and saw a beautiful doorway decorated with that famous Moroccan tile us Westerners love so much. The couple sprang into action. The man picking his spot precisely and the woman darting straight for the doorway and flashing the most glorious European pose you ever did see. Then… SNAP. They got the picture.
At this point, I was bursting out laughing as we passed the impromptu photo shoot. I couldn’t help myself. Jackie and I both knew that picture was going straight to Instagram with a fancy filter. If only their followers could have seen the landscape outside of the camera lens. Maybe they would hold off on the likes and praise and start to understand what it was really like in the heart of Marrakesh.

My Two Cents:

This is a hot topic now more than ever. What is real? What is fake? What has been doctored? And what is raw? The internet and social media are interesting tools in the modern world. In my experience, everything is doctored at least a little bit. We, as humans, have a whole host of cognitive biases that affect the way we receive, process, and spread information. That’s why journalists have to get degrees. There are A TON of psychological barriers when it comes to reporting accurate information. It’s safe to say that the general public hasn’t quite figured out how to report at the level of professional journalists.
With that being said, fight those biases! Or at least, get to know them. The more you know about your brain the better. If you are fed up with the current state of news and information, get to know what these news companies are trying to target. It is only when we put aside our biases that we have the ability explore new ideas and realities. You never know what you may find when you do that. In the end, it is all about what works in the real world. It doesn’t matter what you believe, what your friends believe, or what your doctor believes. The only thing that truly matters are results.
Always look to the real world for answers. It is only when you take off your bias-colored glasses that you can see the massive, dirty, motorbike-filled landscape around you. Easier said than done, but I believe in us :).
