We’re In This Together

The Story:

It’s easy to focus on the negatives during this pandemic. The deeper we get into quarantine the harder it is to stay focused on future goals and manage mental health. Yesterday I received a call from a friend announcing the cancellation of yet another wedding as the lockdown persists into May. It was a strange occurrence though. This phone call I had with my friend was not the downtrodden kick to the pants that I was expecting. Instead, what we both realized was that even though this situation sucks; it sucks for all of us. We laughed about that. We never guessed that May of 2020 would bring wedding cancellations and government assistance applications, but, hey, might as well go through it with a friend.

My Two Cents:

People are being laid off, schools are closed, and supermarkets can be a nightmare. BUT! That is happening to everybody. Sure, some people are in a much more precarious situation than the majority but that doesn’t take away from the fact that we are all struggling. There is something beautiful about that. The entire human race struggling together to stave off an aggressive virus. This inner will to continue on in uncertain times is such a wonderful part of human nature. Heck, it’s the best part of every superhero movie ever created. The hero takes another devastating punch only to rise again and again and face his challenger. In coronavirus land, communities are coming together and adopting this mentality. If a member gets laid off, people are helping make meals. If there is a shortage of masks, people are sewing more for healthcare workers and their neighbors. There are even teddy bears in windows so the children of the community can go on their very own bear hunts. This virus has taken a lot from us, but don’t for a second think that it has taken everything from us.
Our communities will get us through. We’re in this together.
